Fernando Zobel (1924 - 1984)

Fernando Zobel was born in Manila and moved to Spain in the 1960s. He is a pioneer in non-objective art in the Philippines and influenced succeeding generations of artists who today acknowledge hi profound influence on their work. In 1966, Zobel founded the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca, Spain. The Spanish Ministry of Culture conferred on Zobel the gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts in 1983. Zobel was awarded posthumously the Presidential Medal of Merit by the Republic of the Philippines in 2006.
